Most parents arrive at a newborn shoot with some idea of what to expect.
Very few leave saying, “Yep, exactly as I imagined.”
In the nicest possible way… newborn photos tend to surprise people.
Here are the things parents tell us after their session.
The bits they didn’t expect.
The bits no one really talks about.

“I didn’t expect it to feel so calm”
A lot of parents imagine:
-
rushing
-
crying babies
-
feeling flustered
-
trying to “get it right”
What often happens instead is…
slowing down.
There’s time to feed.
Time to cuddle.
Time to just sit and breathe for a minute.
For many families, it’s the first time since birth they’ve paused and thought:
Oh. This is us now.

“I didn’t think I’d want to be in the photos”
This one comes up a lot.
Parents tell us:
-
“I hadn’t slept.”
-
“I didn’t feel like myself.”
-
“I was just planning on baby-only photos.”
And then later…
Those parent-and-baby images become the favourites.
Not because they’re polished.
But because they’re real.
They show love, closeness, and a version of you your baby will never remember — but one day might really want to see.

“I thought my baby wouldn’t ‘behave’”
Newborns do newborn things.
They stretch.
They yawn.
They feed.
They cry.
They poop at the worst possible moment.
And it’s all… normal.
There’s no expectation for your baby to do anything other than be a baby.
Some of the most loved images come from those in-between moments.

“I didn’t realise how tiny they actually were”
This is the quiet shock.
Parents often say:
-
“I forgot they were that small.”
-
“I forgot the curl.”
-
“I forgot the way they fitted into my chest.”
Phone photos don’t always capture scale.
Or feeling.
Seeing it later — properly captured — can be surprisingly emotional.

“I didn’t expect it to mean more as time went on”
This one usually comes months or years later.
When the newborn stretches are gone.
When the sleepless nights are a blur.
When that tiny version feels impossibly far away.
The photos don’t just show a baby.
They show a beginning.
And for many parents, that meaning grows with time.

And for balance… some honest truths
Not everyone leaves thinking “best thing ever.”
Some parents still say:
-
“I’m glad we did it, but I don’t look at them often.”
-
“It wasn’t essential for us.”
-
“I’m happy we waited and did something later.”
That doesn’t mean it wasn’t worthwhile.
It just means people value memories differently.
And that’s okay.

If you’re still unsure
You don’t need to decide today.
You don’t need to decide because someone else did.
Just ask yourself:
Will I ever wish I had these?
If the answer is maybe…
That’s often where people start.
Whatever you choose, we’re always cheering you on.
Because the most important thing isn’t the photos.
It’s you.
And your baby.
Exactly as you are
