Why Mums Almost Always Say ‘I Don’t Feel Photogenic’ (and Why They’re Wrong)

By 20th April 2026Knowledge Centre

We hear it all the time.
“I’m not photogenic.”
“Can you just photograph the baby?”
“I’ll sit this one out.”

And every single time, we gently smile.
Because we know something you might not.

You are photogenic. You just haven’t seen it yet.

It’s Not Just You — It’s This Season in your Life

Let’s start here.

Growing and having a baby is huge.
Beautiful, yes. Magical, absolutely.
But also… a lot.

Your body has changed.
Your sleep has changed.
Your hormones have been on a rollercoaster.

In fact, it can take up to two years for your body to fully recover.
Two years for things to settle.
Two years to start feeling more like “you” again.

So if you look in the mirror and think,
“That doesn’t feel like me…”

That’s completely normal.
It’s not a flaw.
It’s a phase.

The Problem Isn’t You — It’s Your Experience of Photos

Most mums base “I’m not photogenic” on a few things:

Bad angles.
Harsh lighting.
Quick snaps taken on a phone.
Being the one always behind the camera.

Those photos don’t tell your story.
They don’t show how you look when you’re relaxed.
They don’t capture how your baby looks at you.

And they definitely don’t show you the way we see you.

Have You Ever Been Photographed Properly?

Here’s the real question.

Have you ever been photographed by someone
who knows how to light you beautifully?
Who knows how to guide you gently?
Who knows how to bring out your natural warmth?

Because that changes everything.

In our studio, we don’t expect you to “perform”.
You don’t need to know what to do with your hands.
You don’t need to practise poses in the mirror.

That’s our job.

We guide you.
We adjust tiny details.
We use soft, flattering light.
We create a space where you can just be.

It’s Not About Perfection

This is the bit that matters most.

We are not looking for perfection.
We are not chasing a magazine version of you.

We are capturing something much more important.

The way your baby melts into you.
The way you instinctively soothe them.
The tiny smile you don’t even realise you do.

That connection?
That love?

That’s what shines.

And that is always photogenic.

What You See vs What We See

You might see tired eyes.
We see softness and strength.

You might notice changes in your body.
We see the home that grew your baby.

You might feel unsure.
We see love, in its purest form.

And when that love is captured in a portrait,
it becomes the first thing anyone notices.

Not your hair.
Not your outfit.
Not the things you worry about.

Just love.

One Day, These Photos Will Mean Everything

Right now, it might feel easier to step aside.
To say “just take one of the baby.”

But one day, your child will look for you in those photos.

They won’t care about angles or lighting.
They’ll care that you were there.
Holding them. Loving them. Being their safe place.

And you deserve to be seen in that story.

You Are Already Enough

You don’t need to change.
You don’t need to wait until you feel “back to normal”.

Because this version of you?
This mum, right now?

She is already enough.

And when we photograph you,
that’s exactly what we capture.
