The Egglimpics: How One Little Idea Became Our Favourite Easter Tradition

When Easter Took a Turn

Easter used to look a certain way in our family.

A gentle walk. A little egg hunt. A table full of familiar faces.

Simple. Lovely. Predictable.

And then… my daughter claimed it.

Welcome to The Egglimpics

Over the past few years, our quiet Easter weekend has transformed into something quite spectacular. We now have The Egglimpics. And yes, it is every bit as fun (and slightly chaotic) as it sounds.

What started as a small idea has grown into a full-blown family event. We’re talking egg and spoon relays that get very competitive, creative egg decorating challenges, and this year… a song-writing task was even added to the mix.

Honestly, if you’ve ever watched Taskmaster, you’d feel right at home. There are moments where you wonder who is judging who, and how on earth we ended up taking it all so seriously.

But that’s the magic of it.

It Was Never Just About the Eggs

(Though my Dad does make some beautiful died pace eggs especially for this.)

It’s about the laughter that bubbles up when someone drops their spoon halfway through the race. It’s about the proud smiles when a masterpiece (or masterpiece-in-the-making) is revealed. It’s about everyone joining in, no matter their age.

My dad, now 80, is one of the fiercest competitors. He gives it everything. And I mean everything. Watching him go head-to-head with my four-year-old niece is something truly special. There’s determination on both sides, plenty of giggles, and just a hint of cheeky rivalry.

Those are the moments you wish you could bottle up forever.

The Moments That Matter Most

We’re together. We’re present. We’re properly enjoying each other’s company.

And when you strip it all back, that’s what these special days throughout the year are really about. Not perfection. Not pressure. Just being together and making memories that feel warm and real.

It’s so easy to let these occasions slip by. To say “we’ll do something next year” or “we’ll make it special next time.” But time has a funny way of speeding up, especially when little ones are involved.

A Tradition Created, Not Given

That’s why I love this so much.

My daughter didn’t wait for permission. Nobody asked her to organise anything. There wasn’t a grand plan or a family meeting to make it official. She simply had an idea. She wanted to create something fun for everyone. And she made it happen.

There’s something really powerful in that.

It reminds us that traditions don’t have to be handed down. They can be created. Grown. Shaped by the people we love, in the moments we’re living right now.

Our New Favourite Easter Tradition

Three years in, The Egglimpics are now firmly part of our Easter. It’s what we look forward to, what we talk about afterwards. It’s what brings us all together in the most joyful way.

And one day, I imagine we’ll look back and realise these were the moments that mattered most.

The slightly messy ones. The noisy ones. The ones filled with laughter and a little bit of chaos.

Maybe It’s Time to Start Your Own

So this Easter, or whatever special day is coming up next for you, maybe it’s not about doing what you’ve always done.

Maybe it’s about creating something new.

Stop worrying about what other people think. Get on with that thing you’ve been thinking about

Make something that is yours.
