When we think back to our own childhood, it’s rarely the price tag that comes to mind.
We remember the feeling.
The excitement of running into the sea for the first time that year. The smell of sun cream. Ice cream melting faster than we could eat it. Staying up a little later because it was still light outside.
Those are the moments that stay with us.
As parents, it’s easy to feel pressure to fill the holidays with expensive days out and exciting adventures. Social media certainly doesn’t help. Every scroll seems to reveal another family at a theme park, on holiday abroad or ticking another attraction off their summer bucket list.
But children see the world very differently.
It’s the feeling that matters
Children don’t measure their childhood in pounds and pence.
They measure it in love.
In laughter.
In the feeling of being safe, noticed and included.
A picnic in the garden can become a treasured memory.
An evening spent catching bubbles.
Building a den from blankets.
Watching the rain from the window with hot chocolate.
These simple moments often become the stories they tell years later.
Not because they were spectacular.
Because they felt special.
Small moments become big memories
Children are wonderfully good at finding magic in ordinary things.
A paddle in a stream.
Picking daisies.
Collecting shells on the beach.
Helping to bake fairy cakes.
Running through the sprinkler.
None of these cost very much.
Yet each one is packed with smiles, conversation and togetherness.
That’s the part they remember.
The feeling of having your full attention.
The giggles.
The cuddles afterwards.
Those everyday moments quietly become the foundations of childhood.
Presence beats presents
One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is ourselves.
Not a rushed version checking emails.
Not half-listening while thinking about tomorrow’s jobs.
Just us.
Even twenty minutes of uninterrupted play can mean more than an expensive afternoon spent distracted.
Children don’t expect perfection.
They simply want connection.
When they feel seen and heard, they feel loved.
That feeling stays with them long after the toys have been forgotten.
Don’t forget to be in the story
There’s another thing children notice.
You.
Many parents spend so much time taking photographs that they accidentally disappear from them.
One day your children won’t be looking at your hairstyle or wondering whether you were carrying a few extra pounds.
They’ll simply be happy to see you there.
Holding their hand.
Laughing together.
Giving them a cuddle after they fell over.
Those photographs become proof that you were part of their story.
And that matters more than you might realise.
Memories grow more valuable with time
The funny thing about childhood memories is that they become more precious every year.
The little bucket and spade.
The sandy toes.
The teddy that went everywhere.
The favourite sun hat they refused to take off.
At the time, they can feel wonderfully ordinary.
Years later, they’re priceless.
Not because they were expensive.
Because they can never be recreated.
This summer, keep it simple
Of course, there’s nothing wrong with treating the family to special days out if you can.
Those adventures can be wonderful too.
Just don’t feel that they’re the only way to make magical memories.
Some of the happiest childhood moments happen at home.
A walk after tea.
A game in the park.
A cuddle on the sofa after a busy day.
A family photo taken just because everyone happened to be together.
Children rarely remember what something cost.
They remember how it made them feel.
So this summer, don’t worry about making everything perfect.
Focus on making it joyful.
Because one day, those ordinary little moments will become the extraordinary memories your family treasures forever.
