11 Great Things to Do with Your Baby this Autumn

Autumn up North is a magical time of year. The vibrant colours of the changing leaves will mesmerise your little one, imagine never having seen that before! The wonder of conkers, opening that spiky shell to find the soft insides and a satisfyingly shiny conker! Plus the crisp fresh air, and fun seasonal activities make it a perfect time to explore with your baby. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful day out or something a bit more adventurous, there’s plenty to keep you and your little one entertained. Here are ten wonderful ideas for things to do with your baby this autumn.

1. Take a Stroll in the Park

Northwest England is home to some really beautiful parks. Take your baby for a gentle walk in the pram while enjoying the gorgeous autumn scenery. Visit your local, or plan a day trip to somewhere a little grander like Tatton Park in Cheshire, Calderstones Park in Liverpool, Heaton Park in Manchester, or Lowther Castle near Penrith are perfect for a peaceful autumn walk. Your little one can enjoy the fresh air, and you get to enjoy the colourful views of falling leaves. And they have wonderful play parks too.

2. Visit a Pumpkin Patch

Visiting a pumpkin patch is a fun seasonal activity, and it’s great for some adorable baby photos! Many pumpkin patches also have family-friendly activities such as hayrides and petting zoos. Try Kenyon Hall Farm in Warrington, The Pumpkin Patch at Red House Farm in Cheshire or Greenlands Farm in Carnforth. Don’t forget to pick out a little pumpkin for your baby!

3. Explore an Autumn Woodland

If you want to escape into nature, a woodland walk is ideal. There are plenty of safe, flat paths suitable for prams, and your baby will love looking up at the trees and hearing the rustling of the leaves. Delamere Forest near Chester or Grizedale Forest in the Lake District offer beautiful trails for you and your little one to explore.

4. Attend a Baby-Friendly Story Time

As the weather gets cooler, heading indoors for some cosy fun can be a great option. Many libraries across Northwest England hold baby-friendly story times. These sessions often include songs, rhymes, and interactive play – perfect for stimulating your baby’s senses. Check out your local library for their autumn schedules.

5. Visit a Farm

Many farms in the region offer baby-friendly experiences. You can introduce your baby to some farm animals in a safe environment. Visit places like Smithills Open Farm in Bolton, Farmer Ted’s in Ormskirk or Greenlands Farm Village in Carnforth. Your baby might not remember it just yet, but they’ll love the sights and sounds, and you can enjoy a fun family day out.

6. Enjoy an Autumn Picnic

If the weather allows, why not pack a picnic and enjoy an outdoor meal with your baby? Wrap them up in warm clothes and head to a scenic spot. Many towns in Northwest England offer baby sensory classes, which are designed to stimulate your baby’s senses through lights, sounds, and textures. Look out for local classes in your area. These classes are not only fun for your baby but a great way for you to meet other parents too.

8. Take a Day Trip to the Seaside

Autumn can be a wonderful time to visit the coast with your baby. The beaches in places like Formby, Lytham St Annes or Heysham Village are quieter in the off-season, giving you more space to enjoy a peaceful day. Wrap up warm, and let your baby feel the sea breeze and listen to the calming sound of the waves. You could even build a little sandcastle together!

9. Visit a Museum

Museums are a great indoor option for cooler days, and many have exhibits that are fun and educational for babies. For example, the Museum of Liverpool has interactive displays perfect for little ones, and  Wray Castle in Ambleside is soley focused on play, your little ones will love the Peter Rabbit section! Or you can head a little further afield and hop over to Eureka in Halifax which is an incredible children’s museum.

10. Go to a Baby Cinema Screening

Some cinemas in Northwest England offer special baby-friendly screenings where the lights are dimmed, and the sound is lowered to make the experience comfortable for your little one. It’s a great way for you to enjoy a new film without worrying about disturbing others. Check out The Brewery Arts in Kendal, The Dukes in Lancaster, The Picturehouse in Liverpool or Everyman Cinema in Manchester for their baby cinema listings.

11. Take a Night Time Adventure

As the nights draw in, many places are taking advantage of this and having some fun! Visit Twig or Treat, a glowing lantern parade in Bewilder Wood Cheshire. Or how about a visit to the classic lights of Blackpool? Dress baby in their PJs, then pop a warm romper over the top and go and enjoy your evening adventure together.
