Why is Newborn Photography So Expensive?

Why is Newborn Photography so Expensive?

I had an enquiry recently who admitted she was getting in touch with all the photographers in the area to find out who was the cheapest. We had a little chat and I told her it wasn’t us so she carried on with her search.

Do You Really Want the Cheapest Newborn Photographer?

Afterwards I thought about this a little more. I felt a bit sad for her that this was the criteria for her search: Because after all, don’t we always get what we pay for?

Why is newborn photography so expensive?Don’t We Get What We Pay For?

I Think of cheap photography, and either the photographer is new to everything and not very good. Or they are doing everything they can to keep all their over heads low. Which means their products or service won’t be very good.

Neither of these options seem great to me. But I also wonder when I come across a cheap photographer, if this photographer has actually sat down and worked out their sums. How the time and effort they need to put into creating the work, compares with the money they are asking for in return. Photography may just seem to be the click of a button in your presence, but there are hours and hours of work that go on behind the scenes. Post producing and preparing your work and giving it a professional finish. These photographers’ hourly rate is likely to be way lower than minimum wage!

These days we need more than peanuts to live on, especially if we want to do nice things like pay our bills or do a food shop. A cheap photographer is either struggling to do these things, or they are doing photography as a hobby along side their day job. Which brings us back to the first point; they probably don’t quite know what they are doing.

Do you really want the cheapest newborn photographer?Would you like a Hobbyist or an Expert?

This is fine. We all have to start somewhere. But if it was my newborn baby, my precious new arrival: I know I would want my baby to be in the hands of an expert. Someone who does know what they are doing. The window for getting those truly squidgy sleepy newborn portraits is only a few days. I wouldn’t want to risk missing having a beautiful record of those precious early moments by going to the wrong photographer first. And I certainly wouldn’t like my baby to be handled by someone who didn’t know what they were doing.

A Fair Price for a Beautiful Service

PhotoBaby isn’t the cheapest newborn photographer around, and we are proud of that. We charge a very fair price for a beautiful service. Our stunning studio is a joy to visit- we’ve got everything here your baby could possibly need and we’ve even got a spiral staircase! Our photographers have years of training and expertise behind them, both in photography and baby handling. We understand how to hold and place your baby correctly, how to light them beautifully, how to keep them calm, the list goes on and on. And then we have our products, all  have been carefully sourced and are of the finest quality. (What to look for in a good newborn photographer)

And in case you are wondering, a visit to us won’t break your bank either. Most of our clients spend around £175 a session. They come away with a really nice haul of high res digital images as well as a stunning professionally printed product too. You can spend more or less though, there is no hard sell. We like to think we have something here for almost everyone. Just not if you are looking for the cheapest option: We love what we do, but we want to get paid too.

So Why is Newborn Photography So Expensive?

It isn’t. You are engaging a skilled professional to do a specialist service. Think what you would pay your doctor, lawyer or accountant, I’m sure it would be a lot more.
