To celebrate valentines day, I planned a day of portrait photography and took to the streets of Lancaster in search of love… and I found loads!

I was aiming for a hundred portraits, but the cold saw me off (and everyone else) before I quite made it. No matter, it was great fun and I met a lot of fabulous people.

Thank you to everyone for taking part in Love, we made some fantastic photographs. This week I had the pleasure of meeting Lancaster artist Chas Jacobs, and he is as bright and cheery as his paintings that celebrate our locality.

I enjoyed a fabulous hour and a half drinking coffee, making portraits and listening to Chas’s philosophy on life. He really seems to be living the dream and his enthusiasm and determination is most inspiring.

His website www.chasjacobs.co.uk is well worth a look, he has a great range of prints of local landmarks for sale and he is also available for commissions and workshops.

When I asked him to sum up what drives him, he said “I want life to be an adventure”.

A little while ago I went to Wired In, a fantastic mixed media night run by Richard Davis at the Dukes Theatre in Lancaster. The event was a blend of photographs, film footage and live music and I was so inspired I just had to get involved.

The concept of Labours of Love has been simmering away in the back of my mind for sometime. A chance to do all my favourite things at once; be creative, photograph and meet new people. I’m gradually collecting business people from all walks of career to be presented in a visual, musical collaboration with my husband and his band at the next Wired In event on March 26th.

1. Hold your camera steady and brace yourself- too many photos are spoilt by a little bit of wobble!

2. Get down on your subject’s level- try not to always tower over the little people.

3. Move or zoom in closer- think about what your photograph is about and make that the focus.

4. Keep it simple- try to find a plain background so nothing distracts from your focus, when photographing Grandma- make sure the tree isn’t sticking out of her head!

5. Lock your focus- (most modern cameras let you do this) hold the button half way so your camera focuses on what you want it, and then experiment by moving your subject to different parts of the frame.

6. Know your Flash’s range- if your subject is too far away they will be too dark.

7. Don’t always put your subject in the middle; imagine dividing your frame into thirds and experiment with placing your subject in the different thirds.

8. What is the light doing? Photography is all about light so it makes sense to pay attention to it. Hard light brings out wrinkles, soft light takes them away- move your subjects to where the light flatters them the most.

9. Turn your camera- make some of your images vertical.

10. Become a director- tell your family where to stand and where to look, get creative and have fun!

Hopefully this will help you to make a wonderful record of this season, but don’t forget to live in the moment and not just run around recording it. Keep your camera handy but don’t miss being part of the fun… and remember to get in some of the shots yourself!
