The Big Beautiful Easter Egg Trail

We’ve been very proud to be part of the Big Beautiful Egg Trail that Cancer Care has hosted in Lancaster this Easter. There have been giant eggs on display all around the city centre. Creating exciting shop window displays giving families another great reason to explore more of the city and lovely activity to do together.

Designing Our Egg

My very clever sister is an illustrator. So when Cancer Care asked if we would take part in the event I immediately volunteered Hannah Postlethwaite to decorate the PhotoBaby egg. Inspired by the blue and white and the style of Chinese Willow pattern, she wanted to create a design that celebrated our beautiful area. She painted the egg to take us on the journey of the river Lune. Painting landmarks from the river’s source to the sea in a spiral around the egg; Devil’s Bridge, Hornby Castle, our iconic Lancaster and the beyond to Glasson Dock and Sunderland Point. The resulting egg is aptly beautiful and I’ve been very proud to show it off in our window.

Doing The Trail

Of course my children and I had to start their Easter holidays with the Big Beautiful Egg Trail. And I’m so glad we did; it felt very special! So many beautiful creations and a good reminder of what great shops we have here in Lancaster too. Along the way we stopped off for lunch in Buccelli’s who had the most wonderful mosaic egg (and pizza), and found my husband the perfect birthday present in Waterhouse at the top of town.

We’ve done the Cow Parade in London, and looked for ‘Gromits’ in Bristol on past holidays. The Big Beautiful Egg hunt was a mini version of the same experience. The kids loved using the map to navigate the town and got very excited when they found the eggs. And they were even rewarded with a little bundle of chocolate eggs when they finished the hunt.

Off for Auction

All the eggs are being taken away for auction today and I’ll be very sad to see ours go. I’m sure the auction will be a raging success and raise plenty of  cash for Cancer Care though. So many talented artists and designers have put their hard work into this. It has been a very special event to be a part of and I look forward to being involved again in the future.

Perhaps next time we can have the eggs on display for a little longer. Then we can give more children the chance to take part and more parents an incentive to come into town.
